    The principal quantum number gives the energy level of the electron in an atom. It shows the shells in which an electron is in an atom.

    if n = 1, 2, 3, 4 ...; it corresponds to K, L, M, N ... shells in an atom

    The numerical coefficient of the subshell gives the pricipal quantum number.

    for instance in 4f, the principal quantum number, n is 4 because 4 is the coefficient.

    The angular momentum quantum number, l gives the energy sublevel or subshell.

    Angular momentum quantum number has integral values, l = 0, 1, 2, 3 ... which correspond to s, p, d, f, ... orbitals.
