Metals form positive ions and nonmetals negative ions

    Explanation:

Metal atoms become positively charged ions because they lose electrons when they react with another atom. Metals are situated on the left side of the periodic table. Group 1 and group 2 are called the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals. These metal atoms have valence electrons in an s orbital. Non-metal atoms become negatively charged ions because they gain electrons when they react with another atom. Ions are charged particles formed when atoms lose or gain electrons. This loss or gain makes the outer shell of the atom stable. Metals have fewer electrons compared to nonmetals in the outermost shell.
