The chemical that causes the solid to form is called the precipitant. The solubility of this aqueous solution is used to determine whether or not precipitation occurs. So, precipitation occurs when a product is an insoluble solid and it precipitates out of an aqueous solution. While, this precipitation requires the reactants to be soluble in the solution, so they are able to react with each other. And the solid created (which is a salt) is insoluble.

    An example is the mixing of silver nitrate (AgNO3) and sodium chloride (NaCl). The precipitate forms because the solid created (AgCl) is insoluble in water.
