A Solution X is made by taking 10.00 mL of a 1.0 M solution and add enough water to make 100.0 m

total volume. Solution Y is made by taking 5.0 mL of solution X and diluting it again by adding it to

95 mL of water. Calculate the molarity of solutions X and Y.

    Molarity of solution Y is 0.05 M

    Explanation: Dilution involves addition of more solvent to a solution resulting to a decrease in concentration. Solution X is made by taking 10 mL of a 1.0 M and adding water to make a total volume of a 100 mL. Using dilution equation we can determine the Molarity of solution x. Dilution equation is given by, M₁V₁ = M₂V₂, where M₁ and M₂ are the initial and diluted solution concentrations while V₁ and V₂ are the start and the final volume respectively.

    Therefore;

    M₂ = M₁V₁ : V₂

    = (1.0 M * 0.01 L) : 0.1 L

    = 0.1 M

    Thus, the concentration of solution X is 0.1 M

    On the other hand, solution Y is made by using 5 mL of solution X and diluting it again by adding it to 95 mL Therefore, using dilution equation we can find the molarity of solution Y

    M₁V₁ = M₂V₂

    M₁ = 0.1 M (molarity of solution X)

    V = 5 mL

    V₂ = 5 mL + 95 mL

    = 100 mL

    Thus, M₂ = M₁V₁ : V₂

    = (0.1 M * 0.005 L) : 0.01 L

    = 0.05 M

    Therefore, the molarity of solution Y is 0.05 M
