    We can determine the energy (heat) using the following formula

    heat = specific heat x mass x ΔT

    specific heat (water) = 1.0 cal / g C

    mass = 500 g

    ΔT = 10 C

    heat = 1.0 x 500 x 10 = 5000 calories

    energy of content of the food = 5000 cal / 1.0 g = 5000 cal / g or 5 Cal / g
