Why potassium bromide is KBr but pitassium oxide is K2O

    The charge of the K ion is + 1, and the charge of Br is - 1, so they have a one to one ratio in order to balance out the charges. The charge of Oxygen, O, is - 2, so in order for the charges to balance out to zero there have to be 2 K.
