Can sound

travel in places where there is no matter?

    Sound is created by the vibrations of matter such as air. But theoretically if someone tried to make a sound in space where there is no matter, there would be nothing to vibrate so it wouldn't make sound.

    So no, sound needs matter to travel because sound itself is the vibration of matter.
