Why do electrons affect the structure of a molecule?

    A molecule is an aggregate of atoms that are are bonded together. It is the smallest unit of a chemical compound that can take part in chemical reactions.

    We know that molecules are made up of atoms. The make up of an atom consists of subatomic particles which are protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons and neutrons are located in the tiny nucleus and do not take part in chemical reactions.

    For molecules to form, atoms come together. For atoms to bond, they use their valence electrons. The valence electrons occupy the outermost shell of an atom. These valence electrons are used for chemical bonding. Between molecules, bonding also occurs. The intermolecular and intramolecular bonds determines the structure of molecules. These are controlled by the valence electrons and the atoms that contains them.
