The attractions of forces with same type of others atoms (like hydrogen bonding of water molecules with other water molecules) causes the cohesion, while attraction between the different types of atoms like hydrogen-bonding between water and walls of capillary causes adhesion.

    Explanation:

Actually, Cohesion causes the process of surface tensions. The water molecule at surface of the water develop hydrogen bonding with the inner surface water molecules in order to cohes to each other,

while Adhesion process occur especially when water move against the gravity. The water molecules develop forces with walls of capillary (Capillary action) in order to move upward.

    Conclusion:

So there is wide relationship of hydrogen-bonding with cohesion and adhesion forces depending upon the following condition.

    1) Adhesion occur when capillary action is needed.

    2) Surface tension is basically due to Cohesion forces.
