Some electromagnetic radiation is powerful enough to enter cells and cause cause DNA damage. Since DNA is the molecule of heredity for cells, damage to this molecule can lead to mutations and cancer. The smaller the wavelength, the more powerful the radiation. Additionally, only waves with small wavelengths can enter structures as small as cells. According to the diagram, which type of electromagnetic radiation would not be able to enter cells and damage their DNA?

    Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength between 100 and 400 nm.

    Ionizing radiation such as X and gamma rays also have a small wavelength (less than that of UV rays), and can penetrate the cell and cause damage to the cell.
