Kim and Karley are playing basketball. As they bounce the ball and shoot hoops, Kim says that basketball is a great example of elastic potential energy. Karley says that the game of basketball shows kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy. Who is right and why?

Question 7 options:

Karley is right. When they throw the ball into the basket, it increases its potential energy because it is up high in the air.

Both girls are correct. The ball has elastic potential energy when it bounces, gravitational potential energy when it is in the air, and kinetic energy while it is moving.

Kim is right. As the ball bounces it compresses and then springs back to its original shape.

Neither girl is right. Since the basket ball is constantly moving, it only experiences Kinetic Energy

The right option is that both the girls are correct. The ball has elastic potential energy when it bounces, gravitational potential energy when it is in air and kinetic energy while it is moving.

    Answer: B

    Explanation

The elastic potential energy is the external force stored in an object which is applied on it.

On removal of the external force, the object will come to its original position.

The best example of elastic potential energy is bouncing of ball.

The basket ball is filled with air pressure, so when we push the ball downward, the air molecules exhibits elastic force and on hitting the ground, the stress on air molecules will be released leading to upward motion of the ball in the same path which causes bouncing.

But when we shoot the hoops, the ball will be having maximum gravitational potential energy as the distance between the ground and the ball in the air will be maximum.

While coming down the hoop, it will be exhibiting kinetic energy. So both the girls are correct about basketball.
