The thermal energy affects atoms within the 3 states of matter as below The three state of matter that is solid, liquid and gases expand when heat is added. When heat is added to a substance, the molecules and atom vibrate faster. As atom vibrate faster space between them increases. The motion and spacing of particle determine the state of mater of the substance. The end result of increased molecular motion the molecule expand and take more space. On the other hand when heat leave all substance, the molecules vibrate slower. Atoms can get closer which result in matter contracting.
