    Liquid phos phorus trichloride, PCl3, reacts exothermically with water, H2O, in a very fast reaction. The reaction then forms aqueous phosphorous acid, H3PO3 (aq) and aqueous hydrochloric acid, HCl (aq). The balanced chemical reaction is as follows: PCl3 + 3 H 2O → H3PO3 + 3 HCl. Its product, phosphorous acid, is an important precursor for the manufacture of other phosphorous compounds.
