What happens to the elements Sodium (Na) and Chlorine (Cl) when they combine to form salt (NaCl)

    An ionic bond occurs. This is when sodium (the positive cation) loses an electron to chlorine in order for chlorine (the negative anion) to fill its full octet and form the ionic bond.
