I believe that what is meant here to be particle unit is the elementary charge of the compound SO4^2-. In this case, the whole compound is raised to the power of 2-, therefore the elementary charge is 2-, this is the total electrons that the compound is carrying or sharing. These 2 electrons are being shared with 2 hydrogen atoms to form H2SO4.
