A student increases the temperature of a 417 cm squared balloon from 278 K to 231 K assuming constant pressure what should the new volume of the balloon be

    Solution:

    Lets suppose the gas is acting ideally, then according to Charle's Law, "The volume of a fixed mass of gas at constant pressure is directly proportional to the absolute temperature". Mathematically for initial and final states the relation is as follow,

    V₁ / T₁ = V₂ / T₂

    Data Given;

    V₁ = 417 cm³

    T₁ = 278 K

    V₂ = ?

    T₂ = 231 K

    Solving equation for V₂,

    V₂ = V₁ T₂ / T₁

    Putting values,

    V₂ = (417 cm³ * 231 K) : 278 K

    V₂ = 346.5 cm³

    Result:

    As the temperature has been increased, therefore, the volume is also increased from 417 cm³ to 346.5 cm³.
