Why is a Roman numeral needed for iron compounds but not for compounds containing magnesium?

    Iron has more than one oxidation state, so the roman numeral tells you what the charge is for the iron ion. Magnesium pretty much always has a + 2 charge, so roman numerals aren't needed.
