O identify a liquid substance, a student determined its density. using a graduated cylinder, she measured out a 45-ml sample of the substance. she then measured the mass of the sample, finding that it weighed 38.5 g. she knew that the substance had to be either isopropyl alcohol (density 0.785 g/ml) or toluene (density 0.866 g/ml).

Density is a value for mass, such as kg, divided by a value for volume, such as m^3. Density is a physical property of a substance that represents the mass of that substance per unit volume. To determine the density, we simply divide mass with the volume that was measured. We do as follows:

    Density = mass / volume

    Density = 38.5 g / 45 mL

    Density = 0.856 g/mL

    Therefore, the density of the substance is 0.856 g/mL and looking at the candidate substances, most likely, it would be toluene.
