Why are very high temperatures and pressures required for fusion to occur?

to generate the neutrons that are needed to break the nuclei

    Second answer is correct. protons have same charge so they don't want to be close to each other.

    To overcome the repulsion between the protons in the nuclei that join. By increasing temperature and pressure, the bombardment of the nucleus becomes easy because large amount of energy is required for nuclear reactions.
