How does predation differ from parasitism? How does predation differ from parasitism? Parasites rarely kill their host while predators kill their prey. Predation is + / - while parasitism is + / 0. (0 stands for no effect.) Predation happens between trophic levels while parasitism happens within a trophic level. Parasites are only insects or mites, while predators can be any kind of large animal.
