Which style of music, sometimes called the "first popular music" (note it's music : ])

It was said that hip hop was the first popular music, which was founded in the year of around late 1970s. It was created by DJ's which were experimenting with an audio mixer, and those DJ's used the art of sampling; taking one piece of music and using it as a sound recording or an instrument.
