What is the difference between backstopping and braking in terms of the applications in which they are used?

    Backstopping and Braking both are used for stopping a rotating or translating object. Both are used in braking system of a machine.

    Backstopping is generally used to halt the rotation of a shaft in one direction only whereas braking is used in halting a shaft in all direction. Backstopping is used in clutches in backstop clutches.
