Explanation:

A piston ring is the outer ring installed on the piston of internal combustion engines in order to form a combustion chamber seal thereby preventing the escape of gases from the combustion chamber to the crank case

In an engine where the piston ring is too wide, the rings will not be able to properly seal off the combustion chamber from the from the crank case such that there will be a loss of cylinder combustion pressure and smoke will be produced which will see the engine consuming more oil to function.

Hence, a piston ring with the end gap too wide loses compression which results blowby and in a reduction of the achievable engine power.
