Can somebody give me 2 metaphors for death/dying cancer patient ...

The first one could possibly be a salmon, it lives a short but strong life and fights to survive for mating season by trying to swim up a river, or could be defined as attempting something unlikely, like a cancer patient, most of them die in the process. not sure if this makes sense to anybody else ... but it does for me XD
