Two of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous poems, "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee," are

included in this unit. How are these two poems similar in terms of theme and character?

How are they different?

Both poems deal with the idea of lost love. In 'Annabel Lee', the narrator cannot handle the death of Annabel and lies with her in her tomb because he is obsessed and misses her too much. In 'The Raven', the narrator is haunted by the memory of Lenore in the form of the raven, which he wants would disappear. The setting is different - in 'The Raven' it is a dark, wintry night, whereas in 'Annabel Lee', the poem is situated in a fairytale castle by the sea. Both narrators are obsessed with the death of their loved one, each in his own way.
