What would the tone of Walt Whitman's poem "I Hear America Singing" be if the people in the poem were speaking rather than singing

    It would be less happy, as singing implies that you are feeling joyful. Speaking would make the people seem less happy with the work they were doing, like they were simply getting the work done.
