In paragraph 1, why does Franklin call his project of arriving at moral perfection bold and arduous?

It's bold and arduous because it takes time and patience, while also strength to carry on and stay on the same track. It would take him his entire life and he would still not be able to achieve it, but he would at least make himself a better man in the process.
