How did Shakespeare achieve an elevated social status? He was born into gentry. He was knighted by Elizabeth for his excellent plays. He was given a coat of arms. He didn't, but his contemporaries considered him "noble."

    He was born into gentry. Ater all his mother was the daughter of the gentry and his father was a successful tradesman and mayor of Stratford.
