    Because shere khan ended up killing leader of the wolves

    They realized that Akela was the true leader and even wanted him to stay after Mowgli chased Sheer Khan away but he decided not to because he knew he was too old. They realized who the Alpha was and that Sheer Khan is a bad guy and that they were deceived.
