The era in which a film was written affects your ability to understand it because if a film is from a past era that you weren't alive in the events in the film won't be relevant to you if they were based on current events during that time period.

how can I change this so it's not a run on sentence

    The era in which a film is written affects your ability to relate and understand it, because you won't be able to understand and relate to the events because you weren't alive.
