It had something to do with his blackness, I think-he was very black-with his blackness and his beauty, and with the fact that he knew that he was black but did not know that he was beautiful.     He was proud of his blackness and did not shy away from it, but systematic racism that he was painfully aware of, restricted him in ways white people are not. He felt there was a limit to the pride he could hold due to the humiliations he suffered.
