Okay, I'm not actually looking for an answer, I just need someone to explain to me what exactly they're asking for. This confuses me: "Using the conventions of the English language (proper sentence structure, spelling, mechanics, and so forth), write one sentence that sums up a main theme of this early American literature. To write this sentence, you will need to synthesize the ideas of the reading that you have done for this lesson and make logical connections among the literary works of the time period."

    What you're supposed to do is write down a thesis statement. It is a proper sentence that sums up the entire paragraph and can be put at the beginning of the paragraph to hint at what the paragraph is going to be about.
