Read the plot synopsis below of the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry and answer the question that follows. Society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "sameness," a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from people's lives. Jonas is selected to fulfill the position "Receiver of Memory," the person who stores all the memories of the time before "sameness," in case his society ever needs those memories to aid in decisions that others lack the experience to make. As Jonas receives the memories from the previous Receiver, now the "Giver," he discovers the power of knowledge. He faces a dilemma. Should he stay with the community (his family) and live a shallow life without love, color, sound, and knowledge, or should he run away to where he can live life with all experiences, both wonderful and difficult?
