Basically 10 years after the fall of Troy, Odysseus (a greek hero) still hasn't returned from war yet. Everyone assumes he's dead back home, except us - the reader. The author (Homer) keeps us up to date on his whereabouts. He is currently being held as a (willing) sex slave on the island of the goddess Kalypso. This really makes the sea God Poseidon mad and he sees no reason to let Odysseus go home.
Back home his wife is getting swarmed by men just waiting to replace her husband. The goddess Athena gives Odysseus's son a hint to go look for their father.
So Zeus commands Poseidon to let Odysseus go home and pretty soon he's on his way back. But Poseidon doesn't make it easy so he whips up some storms.
