In Chapter 3 of The Scarlet Letter, what does Hester Prynne mean when she states, "It is too deeply branded. Ye cannot take it off," with respect to the scarlet letter on her breast?

    Hester means that the letter has been on her for too long and too many people have seen it for it to just be taken off. The damage the letter has caused her has already been done.
