In Hemingway's short story "in another country", what did the major mean when he said,"I am utterly to resign myself."

    In Hemingway's short story " In Another Country" the major said " I am utterly unable to resign myself." He means that he is unable to give himself to another person. His wife has died and he gave all his love to her. He is saying that he can't do that again.
