What was the predicament that captain smith found himself in (Titanic)

In the Titanic, Captain Smith didn't slow the ship down when there was an ice berg reported directly in his path. He didn't heed the ice warnings and, he let the lifeboats leave the ship partially filled, ending up responsible for all their deaths.
