Which of the sentences below is an excerpt taken from "In Another Country" by Ernest Hemingway is an example of irony? A. My knee did not bend and the leg dropped straight from the knee to the ankle without a calf, and the machine was to bend the knee and make it move as riding a tricycle. B. But it did not bend yet, and instead the machine lurched when it came to the bending part. C. The doctor said: "That will all pass. You are a fortunate young man. You will play football again like a champion."

    The correct answer is C.

    In this story, the reality is that these young men are all greatly injured. It is unlikely they will ever be able to do normal activities - - like playing football - - again. The doctor's words, however, reflect the opposite of reality, and the reader is aware of it.

    Therefore, it is ironic when the doctor tells the injured soldier that he "will play football again like a champion." It is clear to the reader that this young man will never play football again. The doctor's words are ironic.

    The last sentence because the guy broke his leg and the doctor said he fortunate even though something unforunate happend to him so basically what irony is when u say something but u really mean the opposite
