A claim is the main component of an argumentative essay which lets the audience know your side on the matter.
example:
if you are writing an essay on being able to use cellphones in school or not, your claim could be either:
yes, cellphones should be allowed to be in use at school
or
no, cellphones should not be allowed to be in use at school
