Jonas, the main character, lives in a society where all memories of the past were erased, and only one person has knowledge of those memories. That person is called the giver/receiver of memory. At the ceremony of twelve, which is where 12 year olds are assigned their job for the rest of their lives, Jonas is given the title 'receiver of memory.' Jonas will receive memories from the former receiver whom Jonas calls 'The Giver.' People in their society don't have feelings of love or hatred, neither do they see color. All of this was erased and only the receiver knows/sees these things. The giver slowly starts introducing feelings to Jonas, and Jonas realizes that he prefers those feelings over his current society. The only way for Jonas to spread the memories of the past is to no longer be a citizen of his society. Jonas and the giver create a plan and Jonas runs off to "Elsewhere" leaving his societies boundaries. Once Jonas leaves the boundaries, all the memories are released.
P. S. the film is great too! and will explain it well if you have time
