The ambition of Tom was to earn money, acquire wealthy material, increase his lot. For this purpose he fought with everyone and had spoilt his relations even with his wife.

    Explanation:

In the story, Tom Walker was shown as a very greedy man who wanted to earn a lot of money, wanted to become rich. He wanted to acquire the materialistic things in his life and for that he could do anything.

His greed, his selfishness and madness for money could be seen when Tom's ambition was expressed while he was dealing with the devil in their usurious plan. The devil offered him hidden treasure by the Pirate. For exchange, Tom sold his soul to the devil. He could also sell his own soul for money.
