But in the summer of 1980, when Larry walked out of the research building on Southeast Farallon Island, about 30 miles west of San Francisco, the gulls were no longer friendly. In an uproar of amazing proportions, over 8,000 of the 25,000 gulls nesting on the island began screaming and dive bombing him. Many offloaded gooey white droppings with missile-like accuracy.
