I was born in 1939, in a small county town in Suffolk, resting on the banks of the River Deben. We lived in a rented house, which

was over 100 years old. The house had a large front room, a small bedroom, and a kitchen. Poverty was a constant guest at our

house until we were older. My father died even before I was born, and my mother had to support my sister, my two brothers, our

grandparents, and me. We did not have electricity or running water in the house.

Mother had to work many jobs to take care of us all. Sometimes, after she had paid rent, there was little left to buy groceries.

Life was hard. I wore my brothers clothes when they outgrew them, and mother would stitch torn clothes to make them last longer.

The setting tells the reader that the narrator

A

was poor while growing up.

B. lived in a house with many rooms.

C. had to work many jobs to survive.

D. did not mind being poor.
