And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it-oh so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed, that no light shone out, and then I thrust in my head. Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in! I moved it slowly-very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man's sleep. It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed. Ha! Would a madman have been so wise as this? By visualizing the scene the reader can conclude that the narrator is gleeful. indifferent. irritated. curious.

    The correct option is A)

    Explanation:

The tonality of the scene is gleeful, high spirited or cheerful.

The third and fifth sentences speak to this fact.

In the third sentence, the narrator states

"Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust in".

The sentence betrays that he or she has an expectation that if one could see him in the actual execution of this narrative, they most likely would find it hilarious. It is almost impossible to have an expectation of laughter from the audience when one themself are irritated or indifferent or curious.

In the fifth sentence, the narrator uses an exaggeration - "It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening ... "

Again, this gives the narrator away as being almost playful in his description of the event that took place, given that on the balance of probability, it is impossible for the action he describes to have actually taken an hour. Again, this is an attempt to project his cheerfulness onto the reader, given that exaggeration is one of the tools of comedy.

    Cheers!
