John Clayton is born in the western jungles of Africa near the coast. After his parents die, a female ape named Kala adopts him. John is

about one year old. He is named Tarzan, which means "white-skinned" in ape language. Tarzan is completely unaware of his human

background. When he grows a little older, he finds his parents' cabin, where they once lived like a family. He discovers books there that

teach him about the existence of other humans in the world. It is here that he learns how to read on his own. As he grows, he is faced with

many dangers in the jungle. But he manages to overcome them with his skills. Eventually, he learns how to survive in a human society.
