    "Candite" by Voltaire is about the main protagonist Candite who was an illegitimate nephew of a German baron. He fell in love with the baron's daughter, prompting him to be banished.

    In one of his misfortunes, he met an old woman who took care of him when he was severely flogged. This woman had a serious of misfortunes of his own. The daughter of Pope Urban X, married early but husband died soon. Then, captured by pirates, sold, raped, captured, sold again was some of her misfortunes. She even caught the plague but still life clung to her. Even when everyone seems to easily die, she alone remained alive despite all odds. o, she had come to love life and now wants to remain alive for as long as possible.
