1. stop the continuous progress of (an activity or process)

2. break the continuity of (a line or surface).

To interrupt is to stop the continuous progress of an activity or process. Like when people are playing a game of soccer and you stop the game for whatever reason. Or when someone is talking and you start talking, interrupting them.
