Deism is a religious belief from the 18th century which highlights reason over faith and rejects traditional beliefs in a benevolent creator. Deism originated in the Ages of Reason and the Enlightenment when many people became interested in science and more skeptical of religion and miracles. In the literature represents the belief that God gave an opportunity to all people to discover natural laws by the power of reason.

The good example of Deism in American Literature would be Thomas Jefferson's The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, which omits Christ's miracles and retains his moral teaching.

The main purpose of Deism is to represent a form of national theology that emerged among freethinking. Deism also insists that religious truth is subject to the human reason rather than divine revelation.
