Buddhism teaches there is no permanent, individual self. This is a very hard concept for people to grasp who have grown up with Judaism, Christianity, or Islam, religions that believe strongly in the permanence of the individual self. How does this rejection of the permanent, individual self tie in with the doctrine of the cycle of birth, death, rebirth, and, finally, liberation.

    Because at all times the being is within a context, of a whole which is formed by more beings that need some of others. Although we are essentially unique and individual beings, we will always require one or another situation of our neighbor.

    From conception to death we are in a whole, a context that complements.
