    I think this gives the reader a sense that they have an inside perspective on the village and the strange goings on. The familiarity validates the narrator's perspective.

    It gives it a less formal tone and a comfotable, every day feel. It also makes the text seem more realistic in a way, especially sin people often speak in a familiar/chatty manner.
